Parking System in Melaka
March 20th, 2006
If you are driving to Melaka, one of the most important differences to take note of is the parking system.
Effective from 16 May 2005, Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB), the municipal council of Melaka, has implemented the coupon parking system and phased out the coin-fed meter posts. In other words, at most of the public parking spaces, you will need parking coupon or you risk being summoned.
The parking coupon comes in 2 types – RM0.40 for 30 minutes (blue color booklet) and RM0.60 for 1 hour (red color booklet).
Where Can You Purchase Parking Coupon?
- Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah, MBMB (click here for location map)
- Authorized resellers
If you have not purchased parking coupons from MBMB, you can still easily get it from authorized resellers at any place nearby to parking area. Just ask around the shops, and you will be able to locate the nearest reseller within walking distance.
So, be sure to arm yourself with a few booklets of parking coupons if you are driving in Melaka.

As a tourist driving in Malacca I have found it very difficult. I could guess that coupons were being used on the Sunday I visited but it was a guess because there was no English translation, although Malacca is visited by thousands of tourists every year. I asked a local person where to buy coupons, they did not know. Then I asked if I could buy a coupon from them, they told me no coupons were needed on Sundays. I got a fine but where /how to pay. Sunday the office was closed and I was there for the day. Do you want tourists?

Pat Hughes:
I absolutely agree with you on the lack of public instructions written in English, especially in a supposing tourist-friendly town like Melaka.
There are a number of authorized MBMB parking coupon resellers in the town, but a lot people just couldn’t figure out the relevant sign to look for.
I will help to raise this issue to the MBMB, hoping they would take it into serious consideration for areas of improvement.

Hi,
I am a Malacca guy here.
Just to let you all know that if any1 of you got summons, quickly go to the MBMB building (opposite Melaka mall) to settle your summon because you will get discount : RM30 only need to pay RM5.
One more thing: After 6.00pm-7.59am daily, you can park at the MBMB parking space for FREE !

It is advisable to park at MBMB public parking with coupon because the summon rate is higher than you park elsewhere.
Malacca municipal is very particular on this. Whenever they receive any traffic obstruction / illegal parking, they will immediate come to the spot and issue summons. U guys know la. These kind of summon can be RM100 (MAX) rather than you park on their parking space (RM30) and can be appeal at MBMB office which i had mentioned earlier.
