Malacca Airport Will Be Completely Upgraded

April 4th, 2006

Except the local residents, not many people know about the existence of Batu Berendam Airport in Melaka. Currently, the runway is too short for big aircraft. This airport has got its earth breaking ceremony on 1 Apr 2006, and will be completely upgraded in 30 months.

Batu Berendam Airport is occupying 141 acres of land. Under this expansion, the runway will be upgraded from 1,372M length and 37M width, to 2,045M length and 45M width. Besides, it can also allow Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircrafts to land.

New Facilities

The existing terminal complex will be completely removed, and reconstructed with a 7,000M-square new terminal equipped with international-standard amenities to cater the modern needs.

The old control tower will also be replaced with new construction, and complemented with various advanced aeronautic devices.

Both ends of the runway will be installed with proper facilities to guide night landing, and better assure the safety in bad weather conditions.

Chief Minister Hopes for Shorter Construction Time

Though the expansion is planned to be completed in 30 months, but the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Ali Rustam, hopes the plan to be developed in 18 months.

In comparison, the new LCC (Low Cost Carrier) Terminal in Sepang was completed in 9 months.

AirAsia Sees New Coverage

AirAsia, the most successful low cost carrier in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, is keen to fly to Indonesia from the Batu Berendam Airport, once the expansion is completed.

Tourism, education and economic development sectors will also be benefiting from the expansion, as airway public transport is getting far more accessible than before.

At present, The Malaysian Flying Academy (MFA) is occupying the major part of Batu Berendam Airport.

For your information, the upgrading work of Melaka Batu Berendam Airport has already been officially commenced, and expected to be completed in 2008.

Sorry but I have no idea of where the model can be viewed :)

The construction has been officially commenced by Chief Minister. But no major construction is in-sight yet. Probably the contractor is still having something pending. No comment though hehe

According to China Press report, the upgrading has been put on hold. is it true?

  • 8. Administrator | August 27th, 2006 at 3:30 pm

    Suki:
I’m not too sure about the uncertainty. According to Sin Chew Daily’s article dated 25 Aug 2006, the upgrading work is still in progress.

The current Batu Berendam airport facilities built in 1952, will eventually be flantten, once the new and upgraded infrastructures are in place.

Any flight from Melaka to Singapore? Where can get the schedules and fare? Tks!

  • 11. Administrator | December 20th, 2006 at 6:13 pm

    Mr Tea:
Nop, there’s no commercial flight between Singapore and Melaka at this moment. You have to fly in to KLIA Sepang, and take a cab to Melaka :)

Read from paper that the Chief Minister is urging this airport upgrade work to be started asap.

Personally, I wonder why there’s no progress caught in sight yet on this upgrade project.

There is a new local airline operated by MAS’s sister company, firefly. The fleet is fokker 50 and their hub will be in Penang. I would suggest the administrator to write the authority concerned that to include Batu Berendam airport as one of its route. i believed there is a huge market for domestic air travel since there is no flights serving melaka.

  • 16. Administrator | March 15th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Firefly is currently focusing their routes on the untapped northern peninsula. I believe they will surely consider the untapped Penang-Melaka route as well, especially now that government has promised to upgrade Melaka airport

  • 17. mich tan | March 16th, 2007 at 9:51 am

the upgrading project has been awarding but heard the main contractor is not familiar in airport projects.

  • 18. Ken | May 26th, 2007 at 12:41 pm

  • 19. mich tan | June 23rd, 2007 at 11:41 am

yeah. finally it got started. land refill is in progress. the upgrading will be completed by 29th april 2009

  • 20. mich tan | June 23rd, 2007 at 11:43 am

btw i understand that the runway is only 1800m and not 2045m. wonder whether A320 could land there. if not, there will be another white elephant project.

  • 21. Administrator | June 23rd, 2007 at 3:53 pm

    Mich Tan:
    Thanks for the updates.

Hm…. if the upgraded runway is even less than 2000m, really doubt if AirAsia’s A320 could utilize the airport.

  • 22. Mich Tan | June 29th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

if airasia does not utilise the airport, hopefully other foreign airlines such from china or india could land here.

  • 23. Daniel Chua | July 9th, 2007 at 1:28 am

I finally see some earth dumping in progress in the last couple of weeks on my usual route to work. Pretty excited to know Melaka will finally have a reasonably good airport, hopefully it’ll be utilised wisely for the benefit of the locals here. Such a long wait though. Sighhhh……

  • 24. Daniel | July 10th, 2007 at 1:25 am

Just curious….. will the flying academy still remain and share the upgraded runway?

    Propose MALACCA AIR (Picture)

This airline will start operating in 2008/09

Our aim is to create an airline for Umrah Package and commercial in and around Malaysia. Our customers will have a genuine pleasure when flying with us, where paying less is not equivalent to lowering standards in term of services or comforts and which was open, sincerely and user-friendly. So if we tell you there are extremely cheap flights up for grabs then we wish to do so because it is the truth. We wanted an airline with kind staffs that placed no barriers between themselves and the customer, we wanted to operate with new aircraft, to fly to major airports and to neither delay flights nor overbook them. It’s as simple as that.
    Punctuality
When you fly with us, punctuality is our priority: our flights arrive on time, which considerably surpasses the industry average.
When you fly with us punctuality is very high: on our flights arrive on time, an average that tops considerably that of the industry.
    Choice of Seating
We are the first airline in to allow customers to choose where they wish to sit at the time of booking.

This concept schedules the connection of the federal state of Malaysia to the important economic centres in the Malacca area and southern region, as well as a connection to the important economic centres in southern Malaysia and the surrounding countries. The airport Batu Berendam thus becomes our hub. A fleet of two modern turboprop aircrafts featuring 30 to 50 seats , two jet TU-204 and one IL-96-400 based at Batu Berendam airport, will carry you comfortably and in an ecologically friendly way. We see ourselves as a niche provider operating on routes, which low cost carriers cannot economically serve due to an overcapacity resulting from too large aircraft, and on routes where regional airlines cannot enter the market due to the necessary high fares. Similar to low cost carriers we have a simple and transparent one-way ticket based fare system. Short ground times as well as paperless flying with e-tickets make up the cost saving strengths of the Regional Flexible Concept.

As is the case with classic airlines and in strong contrast to typical low cost carriers, the customer finds a high service component regarding to our concept. In order to shorten the total travelling time of the customers, together with short check-in times at the departure terminals the possibility for Internet and SMS check-ins is also provided for travellers with hand luggage only. Especially time-sensitive travellers who are travelling with hand luggage only, are thus already the evening before able to check-in from any location. Complemented by a high-degree of availability of its own service centre and free catering in the form of a welcome-snack as well as the extensive classic on-board service at extra cost, these service components form an important unique selling point.
On weekend days, where only a minimal frequency of scheduled flights arises – due to a hardly existent emergence of business trips, our fleet will be provided for the charter business. The target groups are predominantly sports teams on their way to away games, but also companies that prefer a direct and time-saving journey – provided with a personal touch – for advanced staff trainings, facility visits or staff outings. In addition, tour operators and hoteliers are given the opportunity to hire our fleet for seasonal charters to European, Middle-East, Australia and USA destinations. Complemented by a high availability of our fleet, short-term ad hoc charters also belong to our charter portfolio. Aircraft sizes of 30 to 196 seats allow us an advantageous positioning in these very lucrative charter segments
The airline’s cargo department offers the fleet’s freight capacities for carriers and parcel services, but also for individual enterprises. Due to the high frequency of scheduled flights, this offer marks a reasonable alternative to protracted marine transports or separate cargo charter flights among the individual countries bordering the South East Asia.

I would like to know who is the company to upgrade the melaka airport. May i have the address? Because i would like to apply my Intership (LI) at there to gain some knowledge on road pavement. thanks.

  • 31. Dr. Arthur P.Y.M.ah. | March 4th, 2008 at 3:17 am

Had been away from Malacca for nearly forty year. However, I “balek kampong” quite often. Each time I get to Malacca I bemoan the fact that one can only get back by road. She is supposed to be a developed state by 2010, yet there is no proper air, sea or rail transport to this once flourishing city.
The news that there will be a new airport being developed will definitely give die hard patriotic Malaccans like me a sense of pride as well as convenience that at last some sort of improvement is on its way. In this time and age of fast travel Malaccans should be able to have various choices of getting around. Let our dear Batu Berendam be the leader and who knows a better harbour and rail links will follow later maybe! I am sure “MALACCA BOLEH!”

Hi, just want to know whether AirAsia will fly to Kuching after upgrading? It is too troublesome have to take the coach to JB-Senai Airport or KL-LCC to take the flight to Kuching. The total journey is abt 4 to 5hrs incl waiting time in airport.

May i know will AirAsia fly from Sandakan(Sabah)? Thx…

  • 36. Dr. Arthur P.Y.M.ah. | July 11th, 2008 at 2:28 am

I last wrote in Marh 2008 re the new airport construction . Can any good soul enlighten me as to how far things have gone and when will completion be? It is exciting to know our dear Malacca at last is included as a World Heritage City . With this she should expect more domestic and international travellers to drop by. To complement this status it is only pertinent to have dependable flights flying into and out of the city. Let us hope that the new B.Berendam will not let us Malaccans down. I still cling tenaciously to the slogan:” MALACCA BOLEH”!
