Kotamas is Reconstructed into Melaka Mall

May 1st, 2006

When you are passing through the Leboh Ayer Keroh, the Jaya Jusco shopping centre will surely be caught in sight as a main landmark. Opposite Jaya Jusco, there was also a shopping complex known as Kotamas. In the initial stage of Kotamas lifespan when occupancy rate was high, it was quite a popular shopping destination. However, good day doesn’t stay long, and Kotamas eventually ended up as a popular stop for express buses coming into Melaka, instead of achieving its intended objective to attract shoppers and merchants.

Melaka Mall Under Renovation

Due to tough financial difficulties facing by the managing corporation, Kotamas has finally ended its operation in late 2005. Recently, Melaka Sentral Sdn Bhd, the State Government-owned company, has acquired ownership of the shopping complex. The State Government is currently renovating the building, and it will be re-born with a new life as Melaka Mall.

At the moment of this writing, the signage of Melaka Mall has already been fixed on the building. Anyone passing by Jaya Jusco or Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah city council will be able to spot the new signage of Melaka Mall, despite its on-going renovation work. At a quick glance, one can tell that the new Melaka Mall logo has a similar feel to that used for Melaka Sentral.

According to plan, Melaka Mall will be featuring a bowling alley, cinema, and even a hotel, in addition to shopping outlets. However, this should not be treated as the latest and updated information, as the plan might have been changed since its initial acquisition process.

More relevant information about Melaka Mall will be available and updated here at AmazingMelaka.com from time to time.

    KeL,
Thanks for updating in this post about the opening of MBO in Melaka Mall. Good that there’s an additional choice of cinema in Melaka in addition to GSC. After all, Melaka Mall is nearer to residents staying in Bukit Beruang, Ayer Keroh and near by places. The market of MMU students is relatively large, if MBO offers better movie watching experience :)

You are welcome, the Administrator. I’m a hardcore movie fan too, & is looking forward to catch the upcoming titles at the cinema. Yes, I do believe that the market there will be very huge & potential as schools, shoppings, government departments, residentials, & university, are located nearby. Youngsters who will probably contribute to a large crowd.

I do heard that the ticket prices for movies in MBO is cheaper by as much as RM1 than its’ rivals. Furthermore, they also have prepaid “Membership Card” facility where members will need to sign-up for RM110, where members could easily purchase movie tickets (maximum 6 tickets per transaction) at a special ticketing kiosk located in the cinema lobby. RM100 is the preloaded amount where a member can purchase tickets, & the additional RM10 is the first time registration fee. It’s just like the prepaid mobile that we are using. Once the amount reaches RM10 & below, a top up/reload need to be done at the Customer Service Counter where an amount that you wish to top up/reload will be credited into the membership card for the next purchase of tickets. What’s interesting about the membership card is that besides having the hassle to queue up, members can purchase tickets at a reduced rate by as much as RM1 through the ticketing kiosk, which means that RM8 per ticket from the normal price of RM9. Furthermore, there is no expire date of both the membership card, & the preloaded amount.

Hope AmazingMelaka.com can assist in promoting the MBO Cinema in the state.

By the way, as stated that the MBO Cinema will be opening on the 15 Dec ‘06, there are no news about it as the days approaching. Is it really confirmed? However, I’m looking much forward to the opening of the cinema as I’m a hardcore movie fan too. December would be a very “profitable” month if the cinema opens as school & university students are on holidays, plus lots of year-end festives & shopping mood.

Having 7-screens would be the current largest in the state. Hope it opens as soon.

    Boy:
Yap, I also don’t sense any sign of Melaka Mall readying for business by 15th Dec.

KeL, if you return to check this post, could you please update on the presence of MOB in Melaka ;)

  • 6. KeL | December 14th, 2006 at 1:52 pm

Initially, the cinema was scheduled to open on the 15 Dec. But however, I went to the site about 2 weeks ago to check it out, the renovations is still far from completion. I’ve asked the contractors at the site about the opening & they have no idea about it.

Perhaps the opening need to be delay, but as to when I’ve no idea. Maybe somewhere Jan or Feb.

However, I’ll post for any updates available, in here. ;)

Wow, you’re really fast in responding the comment. Thanks a lot

    Current updates:
According to relevant sources, it is likely the cineplex will only be open closer early Feb 2007, in time for the Chinese New Year break. At present, it all depends on the completion of renovations to Melaka Mall, which is expected to be sometime in Jan 2007. What would help speed up the rest of the process is the fact that the internal structures for the cineplex such as the stadium & slope flooring, hall walls, stairs, etc, are in place, leaving only the installation of carpets, projectors and equipments, fittings, seats, and finishings when accessible.

The CM has announced that the opening of Melaka Mall has been postponed to April 07 because he wants all shops to be renovated 1st before opening. So, I think MBO will open in April 07 too.

Hello administrator have you got the latest information on the grand opening of Melaka Mall. This is because last week( 7 July 2007) I walk through the Ayer Keroh Highway I saw that the food court and MBO Cinema is now open.. But.. I Didn’t see any of the sign of the grand opening of Melaka Mall

  • 18. Administrator | July 16th, 2007 at 9:06 am

I have no information about the date when Melaka Mall will be officially initiated. This is a question in my mind as well. Except the new MBO Cinema as key tenant, and Patisfrance Bakery anchored at the same main-entrance-lot, I don’t see many shops bearing the sign of renovation.

Yes, there is news going around about possibility of Parkson anchoring into Melaka Mall. I’ve also seen Parkson’s banner on Melaka Mall exterior wall. However, I don’t have any further updates on the opening date, or whether the plan is definitely going on.
