Christmas Decoration at Portuguese Settlement
December 15th, 2006
Christmas celebration is approaching. Do you know that Melaka has a small but famous settlement known for its attractive Christmas atmosphere?
Some of you might have guessed it right that I’m referring to Portuguese Settlement in Melaka. The Portuguese Settlement in Melaka is a preserved land for descendents of Portuguese, situated along the coast, and accessing from Ujong Pasir.
Every year, when Christmas is around the corner, residents in Portuguese Settlement will spend some efforts decorating their houses and streets, to create Christmas ambiance within the square. In December, this is also the time when Portuguese Settlement experiences congested traffic in the evening.
In order to avoid the crowded Christmas eve, I’ve visited Portuguese Settlement on last Saturday to enjoy Christmas decorations readied for this year.
Street lightings in the settlement.
This house is generous. The family must have spent a few thousand Ringgits in the decorations and settings. The above 4 pictures are all taken within the same house. I was surprised and impressed with the air-bloated Santa Clause.
If you would like to take picture, I would advise not to go there too late. I was there at 10:30PM, and having difficulty coping with the relatively long exposure on my camera, as I wanted to capture the ambient lights.
This is the Christmas tree set-up at Portuguese Square.
Have you been to Portuguese Settlement for this coming Christmas? This coming weekend is a perfect time to visit, if you’re like me who just want to take pictures in less crowded day.

Wow…. the owner of my favourite Christmas-decoration-house visited this site
Juniot, I really love the big Santa Clause. Thumbs up! But too bad when I visited the 2nd time with my colleagues from KL, it was blown down, probably due to stormy day.

I’m so looking forward to this year’s celebration but i need help ASAP.
I’m planning to head down there for my Christmas celebration. As i’m the only one in my family who celebrates Christmas, i’ll be celbrating Christmas alone tis year as well, meaning that i’ll heading down from KL to Melaka all by myself to visit the celebration. I’m only able to get a bus on the 26-27th. Will the celebration still be on? Or if there’s any highlights on a particular day that i should only go to the portugeise settlement on that particular date or time?
And aside to that, can anyone recommend me a place to stay that is close to Ujong Pasir? I’ve been staying in one of the inns at Jonker Street everytime i have a trip to Melaka and i guess, its a little too far to be travelling to and fro Jonker and Ujong Pasir. As i’m travelling alone, i dont mind any kind of accomodation but preferably its an economical and convenient one. Well, is there?
And Merry Christmas, ppl =D

DarkDelaqroux:
There’s no public party at Portuguese Settlement on 26th. However, most houses at Portuguese Settlement will still be lighting up their deco and lights.
As for accommodation at Ujong Pasir, you may try Coastal Park Hotel, located by the main road of Ujong Pasir. Phone: 06-2829199

well, i checked the rates for coastal park hotel and i guess its off my budget (i forget to mention that i’m just a college student and my savings are just so-so ^^”). My friend was telling me to just get an inn over at jonker like how i did before as they are cheaper. After all, he said that it will just take a few hours for me to see the portuguese settlement’s decorations so there’s no point for me to actually stay overnight in Ujong Pasir when staying in Jonker Street would be much convenient (in terms of food and things to do).
Well, probably i would take his suggestion into consideration but i would like to know how do i get from jonker street all the way to the settlement via public transportation? And what are the rates? Or is there a link you can direct me to where i can get all those information from? Thanks =)
